Posted on by Writing West Midlands Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Issue 7 – now available

Issue 7 of Write On! Magazine, which is edited by special guest Rosanne Rivers, is available to read on our website and you can also download a copy of it to keep! Featuring 27 pieces of writing from young people from the West Midlands, Rosanne had this to say about the issue, ‘Perhaps my favourite aspect of reading these submissions was how many pieces make you question the world around you. The writers who have submitted to this magazine are between the ages of 8-20, and yet they raise questions that adults ignore or accept as a normal part of life.’

You can read the magazine online here www.sparkwriters.org/latest-issue/ and you can download it by clicking here.

We hope you enjoy Write On! Magazine! If you know of anyone aged 8 to 20 who would like to submit their writing to the Magazine, please visit our Get Involved page to find out more.

Two new issues for December

Posted on by Writing West Midlands Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Two new issues for December

As Christmas approaches we are delighted to present two new issues of Write On! Magazine – one special edition featuring writing created by some of the young people who took part in the Write On! Young Writers’ Summer School earlier this year and our biggest issue yet, issue 5.  Will Buckingham, who was one of the writers working with the young people at the Summer School, said this of the special edition, “These were writers with quirky talents and quick wits, writers unafraid to play with words and ideas to create things both new and strange. It was an honour to work with them. And by the end of the week, I was overwhelmed by what is possible, if you put a bunch of talented young people together, give them pens and paper, make sure that they are well fed, and give them time and space to follow their own noses.

The poems, stories and snippets gathered here are just a sample of these writers’ work. Read them and remember their names. I very much suspect  you’ll not have heard the last of them.”

As our current Magazine editor takes a break until Autumn 2015, he reflected on issue 5, “… it’s about thinking what matters for your writing and being bold enough to try it knowing that you could fail. We have various constraints on Write On!, for instance, that matter a lot: we can’t run serialised stories from issue to issue, we can’t squeeze in novels. It’s less of a rule for us but we haven’t run articles and I would have told you that we’d never run an article that was an explanation of a piece of prose fiction: the writing in Write On! must work without an introduction.”

If you’d like to submit writing for the next issue which will be out on April 2015, please see our Get Involved page. The spring and summer issue will be edited by writer of young adult dystopian fiction Rosanne Rivers. To find out more please visit her website: http://rosannerivers.com/.

“This tale I am about to engulf you with is no ordinary tale…it is a tale that will divulge to you the truth about Nogard’s life….” – Extract from A New Beginning by Musa Khan.

Editor, William Gallagher, had this to say about this latest issue:

“There are pieces in this new collection of the finest young West Midlands writers that will make you beam. There are some that will make you think and there are others where you will wonder at the sheer depth of imagination.

These writers have gone into imaginary waters more than any in previous issues and they all bring us right along with them into the strangest, the daftest and the most powerful depths.

It’s been a privilege to edit four issues of Write On! so far and certainly a pleasure to work with these writers as we’ve developed pieces to their full potential. But there are stories in this latest issue that, frankly, I wish I’d written myself.

All of us working on Write On! are looking for strong writing and we are focused on making the best magazine for you to read. That would be true no matter what the age of our writers was but as they are this young, we do have an eye on how they are progressing and what this can mean for their futures. It’s very easy to see that many will be able to continue writing as a career but you read how vividly they all communicate and you know that this talent, this expression will be a boon for them whatever work they choose to do.

I’m very proud of them and you will be too.”

We hope you enjoy reading this issue! You can read it online by heading to the Latest Issue tab or download it here: http://issuu.com/writingwestmids/docs/issue_4_for_web.

It was once beautiful.

When it could bathe her in liquid gold,

And the taste of salt could fill her mouth and scrub her skin clean.

Its cool caress enveloped her and dragged her in,

She did not complain.

She tried to talk,

But it silenced her with brackish kisses.

Effervescent on the surface of the water,

She floated amongst the waves, speechless, breathless,

Gone.”

Depths by Gaia Harper
