Liz Hyder  is a writer, creative workshop leader and former lead writer at our Shrewsbury Spark Young Writers group, whose Young Adult novel, Bearmouth, was named The Times Children’s Book of the Year in 2019 and received critical acclaim from The Observer, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Financial Times, New Statesman and Literary Review.  
As part of the READ ON Europe-wide project, which Writing West Midlands and Spark Young Writers are part of, Liz spent some time in early 2020 making recommendations and suggestions to readers across the continent.

Get Writing

If you’d like to submit a piece of your writing for possible inclusion in the magazine, please see the Get Involved page to see more details. This magazine is published online three times a year: summer (June/July), winter (October-December) and spring (February-April) terms.

Join a Group

With 22 groups across the West Midlands, including 2 online-only groups, there will be a Spark Young Writers group near you.

Groups are open to young writers aged 8-17 who are interested in any type of creative writing.

Get published

Submit your writing to our magazine which is published online three times a year.

If you live or study in the West Midlands and are under 21, you can submit up to three pieces of writing of fewer than 500 words.

Summer Writing Challenge

Book for a week of creative writing activities, and individual feedback from professional writers.
