Being a Lead Writer
Although we don’t currently have any roles available, we are always interesting in meeting people who write and who would be interested in working with young people as part of our Spark Young Writers programme.
In 2024-25, we are delivering 240 children’s writing workshops across the region. We occasionally need people to cover our lead and assistant writers due to illness or absence; if this is of interest to you, please get in touch with us.
What does it meant to be a Lead Writer?
Working with a volunteer Assistant Writer, you will deliver a two hour workshop once a month to a group of young writers aged 7 – 11 years old (junior school age).
Energetic and enthusiastic, we want our team of Spark Lead writers to be ready to share their love of creativity, explore imagination, and help develop the next generation of talent in the West Midlands.
We can offer some training and mentoring by attending a training session where we cover the basics of child safeguarding, and show you our booking system. We’ll also discuss the breadth of genres we’d like you to cover and offer some ideas about how you might do that. You have the opportunity to observe other writers delivering sessions, and join our group of lead and assistant writers who will generously share successful workshop ideas, and make you feel part of a group of writers who enjoy sharing their experience with others, and with the young people they work with.
We try to work with people who live locally to our groups. We can offer a fee of £110 per session, plus travel expenses (mileage paid at 45p per mile).
