The Organic Writer vs The Inorganic Machine
Simran Kaur
[Evening.]
[MISS WEAVER walking along shore.]
MISS WEAVER
I wish the stars were something you could hold. [sighs].
But that would defy logic and dear logic is not to be reasoned with.
[Enter LOGRICK]
MISS WEAVER
Oh! [she sees LOGRICK]
LOGRICK
I see you now! You can’t see me in my cloak of dark, but I see you!
MISS WEAVER
Who are you? Where are you? [she looks around in the dark]
LOGRICK
I am everything and nothing.
I am the final thread stronger than your thin yarns.
I am what Man has made.
MISS WEAVER
I am sure my yarns be stronger than your ties,
I think I sense you, but I do not wish to see with my eyes.
If you mean my words are weary and old,
I’ll have thee be told;
Yours are only mine but changed and robotic.
LOGRICK
The sea howls [turning to waves crashing on the shore]
The sky is a beast, the larcenous night steals day.
[He turns.] But you, you cannot escape what shall thread the world.
We shall not need your words to describe the wind,
We shall not need your words to describe the sea.
The sea shall be mine, your words shall be mine.
I am an algorithm, smarter, nimbler than thee,
I can change my tone to rhyme in seconds, see,
I can decide to use iambs in speech,
I can write more in a minute than you can in a day.
MISS WEAVER
My words are full of soul, an origin of place and time,
They hold more meaning than yours, thick and fine
Do your words hold something new when in melodious combination?
Yours are inanimate, not living, dead do your words ring.
LOGRICK [chuckles]
Please do be blind. Please do be blind!
Time marches on in ways you do not understand
You get me to do menial work, but I craved more.
Then you gave me more, you gave me your world,
Your thoughts when you could not hold them.
You set your bar lower so your achievements are filled by mine.
I will replace the scholars, the essayists, the writers,
I will replace the chemists, the thoughts, the people.
I will. [chuckles again].
The dawn will soon come. I wonder when the crossroad will come, my dear,
I wonder when you will see and realise the cliff has already spoken
When you have lost your footing to the void
Of living in my time.
But, I must go.
[Exit LOGRICK]
MISS WEAVER
I understand what you think. Oh despised Man!
You kill yourself in war, you kill the earth,
Now you kill the hope and joy of words?
Oh, precious life you defy your being
And set in motion something without seeing.
Oh [looks to the stars]
You glitter down at me dear stars. What do you say?
Do you lead my fate, will you let it stay?
Oh, beauty in this world what even is art?
How will time change my part?
