The Magic Box
Martha Jobson
I will put in the box the sound of a baby’s first cry,
The sight of a purple elephant,
And the touch of a dog’s soft fur.
I will put in the box
A monkey, a kettle, and a dinosaur.
I will put in the box
A scribble, a whisper, a sigh.
I will put in the box a bumblebee and the rain,
and a fairy on a broomstick, and a witch with wings.
My box is fashioned from
Gold from a mountain and
Coal from a mine,
With locks on the lid and
Roses on the corners.
Its hinges are made from a dragon’s tongue.
I will adventure far and wide
With my magic box.
